Description

Learn how to grill fresh filet steaks and top them with creamy mozzarella, ripe tomatoes, and aromatic basil for a vibrant Italian-inspired dish. This recipe elevates tenderloin steaks with fresh, simple ingredients and a balsamic glaze.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 (6-8 oz) filet mignon or tenderloin steaks
  • Kosher salt, to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 2–3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 roma tomatoes, sliced into 1/4-inch thick rounds
  • 4 ounces fresh mozzarella, sliced
  • 8 fresh basil leaves
  • Reduced balsamic vinegar, for drizzling

Instructions

  1. Season the filet steaks with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper. Lightly brush each steak with olive oil.
  2. Preheat your grill to high heat. Once hot, reduce the heat to medium.
  3. Place the steaks on the grill and cover. Grill for 5 minutes.
  4. Flip the steaks and cook for an additional 5 minutes, or until your desired level of doneness is reached.
  5. Option 1: Remove steaks from the grill. Top each with tomato, basil, mozzarella, basil, and tomato. Serve immediately.
  6. Option 2: Reduce grill heat to low. Top each steak with tomato, basil, mozzarella, basil, and tomato. Close grill lid and cook for 3-5 minutes until cheese is slightly melted.
  7. Transfer steaks to a platter and let rest for at least 5 minutes. Drizzle with reduced balsamic vinegar before serving.

Notes

  • Select high-quality, fresh filet mignon for the best grilling results.
  • Roma tomatoes offer firm flesh and balanced acidity, holding up well when sliced.
  • Fresh mozzarella provides a creamy texture; avoid pre-shredded varieties.
  • Use vibrant green basil leaves for optimal flavor and freshness.
  • Extra virgin olive oil adds fruity notes that complement the steak.
  • For medium-rare, aim for an internal temperature of 130°F.
  • Resting the steaks allows juices to redistribute, ensuring a moist result.
  • Reduced balsamic vinegar adds a sweet and tangy finish.
  • Pair with grilled vegetables, a light salad, or garlic bread for a complete meal.
