Description

Discover how to prepare Crostini with Caramelized Onion and Fig Jam, a delightful appetizer offering a perfect blend of sweet and savory flavors. This recipe guides you through creating impressive crostini with fig and sweet onion, ideal for any gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 10 cups sweet onions, sliced
  • 6 figs, chopped
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 4 big sprigs thyme
  • 1/2 cup white wine
  • Balsamic reduction, to taste
  • 1 skinny, long baguette, sliced on the bias
  • Olive oil, for brushing
  • 2 tbsp garlic seasoning
  • Parmesan cheese, for sprinkling
  • 2 heads of garlic
  • Olive oil, for drizzling
  • Salt, for sprinkling
  • 1 16 oz round brie
  • 7–8 pieces prosciutto
  • Thyme sprigs, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Make the Onion and Fig Jam: In a large pan, combine sliced sweet onions, chopped figs, 2 tablespoons of butter, and thyme sprigs. Cook over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until the onions caramelize and the figs break down, creating a naturally sweet, jammy texture (about 15-20 minutes).
  2. Add the remaining 1 tablespoon of butter, a drizzle of balsamic reduction, and white wine to the jam mixture. Continue cooking for another 5-10 minutes until the jam thickens and becomes rich in flavor. Remove from heat and let it cool. This caramelized onion and fig jam can be stored in the fridge until ready to use.
  3. Prepare the Crostini: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Combine olive oil and garlic seasoning, then brush this mixture on both sides of each baguette slice. Arrange the crostini slices on a baking tray and bake for 5-8 minutes per side, or until they are slightly browned and crisp. Remove and set aside.
  4. Roast Garlic and Cook Prosciutto: Increase the oven temperature to 400°F (200°C). Cut the top off each garlic head, drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle with salt, and wrap in foil. Roast for 30-35 minutes until the garlic is soft.
  5. In a skillet over medium heat, cook each prosciutto slice for 1-2 minutes per side until crisp but not brittle. Cut the cooked prosciutto into crostini-sized pieces.
  6. Assemble the Crostini: Slice the brie into long, thin strips and then cut into 2-inch pieces. Smear roasted garlic on each crostini slice. Layer with a piece of prosciutto, a slice of brie, and a generous tablespoon of the onion and fig jam. Garnish each crostini with a fresh thyme sprig for visual appeal and aroma.

Notes

  • Use medium-low heat when caramelizing onions and figs to prevent burning and ensure even caramelization. Stir occasionally.
  • If the pan dries out too quickly during caramelization, add a splash of water.
  • Slice the baguette on the bias to maximize the surface area for your delicious crostini toppings.
  • Brush baguette slices evenly with olive oil for optimal crispiness.
  • A light sprinkle of Parmesan cheese on the crostini adds an extra savory punch.
  • The onion and fig jam can be made up to five days in advance and stored in the fridge. Its flavor improves overnight.
  • For a vegetarian option, skip the prosciutto and add roasted red peppers, sun-dried tomatoes, or toasted nuts.
