Description

An easy homemade recipe for golden, creamy, and irresistible crispy crab rangoon wontons, perfect as an appetizer or snack.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 20 wonton wrappers
  • 2 cups vegetable oil, for frying
  • ¾ cup imitation crab meat, chopped
  • ½ cup cream cheese, softened
  • 2 tablespoons green onion, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • Sweet Thai chili sauce or plum sauce, for serving

Instructions

  1. Make the filling: In a mixing bowl, combine chopped imitation crab meat, softened cream cheese, finely chopped green onion, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, sugar, and black pepper. Mix until the filling is smooth and well blended.
  2. Assemble the wontons: Prepare a small bowl of cold water. Place a wonton wrapper on a clean surface. Spoon about 2 teaspoons of the crab filling into the center of the wrapper. Lightly brush water along the edges of the wrapper. Pinch two opposite corners of the wrapper together, then bring in the other two corners and seal tightly, pressing the edges firmly to prevent leaks. Repeat with the remaining wrappers.
  3. Fry the wontons: Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan to 325°F (medium heat). Carefully add 6-7 assembled wontons at a time to the hot oil. Fry for 1½–2 minutes, flipping halfway through, until the wontons are golden brown and crispy. Remove the fried wontons with a slotted spoon and drain them on a wire rack or paper towels.
  4. Serve: Let the crispy crab rangoon wontons cool slightly before serving. Serve them with sweet Thai chili sauce or plum sauce for dipping.

Notes

  • For a more robust flavor, chill the filling for 30 minutes before assembly.
  • Do not overfill the wonton wrappers to prevent them from bursting during frying.
  • Ensure all edges are well-sealed to prevent leaks.
  • Maintain a consistent oil temperature for even cooking.
  • Do not overcrowd the pan when frying; cook in batches.
  • For a healthier option, bake the wontons at 400°F for 12-15 minutes until golden and crispy, brushing lightly with oil.
  • Store uncooked, sealed wontons in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.
  • Fried wontons can be stored in an airtight container for 1-2 days; reheat in the oven to maintain crispiness.
