Description

Tender beef patties browned and slow-cooked in savory mushroom and onion gravy.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 tablespoon dried minced onion
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard powder
  • 1 tablespoon dried parsley
  • 1/4 cup panko-style breadcrumbs
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon neutral cooking oil (for browning)
  • 6 ounces mushrooms, sliced
  • 1/2 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 1/2 cups beef broth
  • 1 ounce dry brown gravy mix
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon-style mustard
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup water

Instructions

  1. Prepare the slow cooker by spreading the sliced mushrooms and onions evenly across the bottom.
  2. In a medium bowl, gently mix the ground beef, egg, dried minced onion, garlic powder, mustard powder, dried parsley, breadcrumbs, milk, salt, and pepper until just combined. Do not overmix. Shape into 4 equal patties.
  3. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the patties for about 3 minutes per side until lightly crusted. Transfer the patties to the slow cooker, placing them on top of the vegetables.
  4. In a bowl or large measuring cup, whisk together the beef broth, gravy mix, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon-style mustard, and fresh parsley. Pour this mixture evenly over the patties.
  5. Cover and cook on low for about 5 hours or on high for about 3 hours, until the patties are tender and cooked through.
  6. To thicken the gravy, remove the patties and set aside. Stir together the cornstarch and water, then mix it into the gravy in the slow cooker. Turn the cooker to high and cook for 5 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened.
  7. Return the patties to the slow cooker, spoon the gravy over the top, and let everything warm through before serving.
