Description

Classic Salisbury Steak with Brown Gravy is a homestyle comfort dinner featuring tender seasoned beef patties simmered in rich brown gravy, served with creamy mashed potatoes and buttery green beans.

Ingredients

Scale
  • pounds ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • ¾ cup finely diced yellow onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 large egg
  • ¾ cup plain breadcrumbs
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¾ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 tablespoons cooking oil
  • 3 tablespoons butter (for gravy)
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2½ cups beef broth
  • ½ teaspoon salt (for gravy)
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper (for gravy)
  • pounds russet potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • ¾ cup warm milk
  • 5 tablespoons butter (for mashed potatoes)
  • ¾ teaspoon salt (for mashed potatoes)
  • 1 pound fresh green beans, trimmed
  • 2 tablespoons butter (for green beans)
  • ½ teaspoon salt (for green beans)

Instructions

  1. Place the cubed potatoes in a large pot and cover with salted water. Bring to a boil and cook 15–20 minutes until fork-tender.
  2. Sauté diced onion in a small skillet with oil for 4–5 minutes. Add garlic and cook 30 seconds. Remove from heat and cool slightly.
  3. Combine ground beef, onion mixture, egg, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Mix gently and shape into 4 oval patties.
  4. Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Brown patties about 4 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate.
  5. In the same skillet, melt butter. Whisk in flour and cook 1 minute. Gradually whisk in beef broth. Add salt and pepper and simmer until thickened.
  6. Return patties to skillet, spoon gravy over, cover, and simmer 10–12 minutes until cooked through.
  7. Drain potatoes and mash with butter and warm milk. Season with salt.
  8. Steam or boil green beans 5–7 minutes until tender. Toss with butter and salt.
  9. Serve steak over mashed potatoes, spoon gravy on top, and add green beans on the side.
