Description
Classic Salisbury Steak with Brown Gravy is a homestyle comfort dinner featuring tender seasoned beef patties simmered in rich brown gravy, served with creamy mashed potatoes and buttery green beans.

- 1¾ pounds ground beef (80/20 blend)
- ¾ cup finely diced yellow onion
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 large egg
- ¾ cup plain breadcrumbs
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ¾ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- 2 tablespoons cooking oil
- 3 tablespoons butter (for gravy)
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2½ cups beef broth
- ½ teaspoon salt (for gravy)
- ½ teaspoon black pepper (for gravy)
- 2½ pounds russet potatoes, peeled and cubed
- ¾ cup warm milk
- 5 tablespoons butter (for mashed potatoes)
- ¾ teaspoon salt (for mashed potatoes)
- 1 pound fresh green beans, trimmed
- 2 tablespoons butter (for green beans)
- ½ teaspoon salt (for green beans)
Instructions
- Place the cubed potatoes in a large pot and cover with salted water. Bring to a boil and cook 15–20 minutes until fork-tender.
- Sauté diced onion in a small skillet with oil for 4–5 minutes. Add garlic and cook 30 seconds. Remove from heat and cool slightly.
- Combine ground beef, onion mixture, egg, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Mix gently and shape into 4 oval patties.
- Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Brown patties about 4 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate.
- In the same skillet, melt butter. Whisk in flour and cook 1 minute. Gradually whisk in beef broth. Add salt and pepper and simmer until thickened.
- Return patties to skillet, spoon gravy over, cover, and simmer 10–12 minutes until cooked through.
- Drain potatoes and mash with butter and warm milk. Season with salt.
- Steam or boil green beans 5–7 minutes until tender. Toss with butter and salt.
- Serve steak over mashed potatoes, spoon gravy on top, and add green beans on the side.
Notes
- Adjust seasoning to your taste.
- Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
