Instructions
- In a small bowl, dissolve yeast and sugar in warm water. Let stand for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour and salt.
- Add the yeast mixture and olive oil to the flour mixture. Stir until a shaggy dough forms.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Punch down the risen dough. Turn it out onto a lightly floured surface.
- Divide the dough into equal portions. Roll each portion into a long rope, about 1/2 inch thick.
- Shape each rope into a snake, coiling it into a spiral. You can make them as long or as short as you like for your fun breadsticks.
- Place the shaped snake breadsticks on the prepared baking sheet.
- Brush the tops with the beaten egg wash. Sprinkle with sesame seeds or poppy seeds if desired.
- Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
