Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 8-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add the softened butter and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, vanilla extract, and buttermilk.
  5. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  6. If making a strawberry flavored cake, gently fold in the strawberry puree.
  7. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
  8. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.

  10. Once cooled, carefully trim the cakes to create a heart shape. You can do this by cutting each round cake in half and arranging the semi-circles to form a heart.
